Amidst Controversy, Ji Fu’er Resigns as Ambassador to Greece: Forever Grateful to Trump and Rubio

After controversies arose regarding U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle—including allegations of seeking personal financial gain, mistreating embassy staff, and involvement with foreign business interests—the White House confirmed on the 13th that President Trump had asked for her resignation. New White House spokesperson Katie Zachariah stated at her first press briefing that day: “We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to submit her resignation. She was a valued member of the team, and we wish her all the best.”
Guilfoyle, 57, is the former fiancée of President Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr.; the couple separated in late 2024 after a four-year engagement. Trump had announced his intention to nominate Guilfoyle as Ambassador to Greece in December 2024. Donald Trump Jr. married Palm Beach socialite Bettina Anderson this past May.
Guilfoyle’s first husband was entrepreneur Eric Villency; her second husband—to whom she was married from 2001 to 2006—was Gavin Newsom, then the Mayor of San Francisco and currently the Governor of California.
Fox News reported that it remains unclear whether Guilfoyle has formally submitted her resignation letter; however, in a statement posted to the social media platform X on the morning of the 13th, she wrote: “Serving as the U.S. Ambassador to Greece has been the honor of a lifetime. I will be forever grateful to President Trump and Secretary of State Rubio for the trust they placed in me by granting this immense privilege to represent the greatest nation in the history of the world.”
She added: “While my tenure as ambassador may be coming to an end, my commitment to President Trump, the ‘America First’ movement, and the country will not cease.”
On the 12th, Trump told the media that he was considering dismissing Guilfoyle, stating that “we are not satisfied” with her performance. The Wall Street Journal reported exclusively last week that, prior to her Senate confirmation, Tsivoul requested that Trump donor Eric Deters wire $100,000 directly to her personal American Express account to pay off credit card debt.
According to a Wall Street Journal investigation, Tsivoul’s promotion of the business interests of the Greek firm Aktor Group raised conflict-of-interest concerns; she also permitted lobbyist Christos Marafatsos to attend meetings with foreign government officials.
Additionally, the Daily Mail reported that the State Department’s Office of Inspector General has launched an investigation into allegations regarding Tsivoul’s treatment of embassy staff, her personal travel, the acceptance of gifts, and conflicts of interest.
Sources stated that Tsivoul’s habit of frequently threatening to fire employees created a hostile work environment at the embassy; she demoted security detail members over trivial matters—including one instance where an agent failed to fulfill a request for ice at 4 a.m. while she was vacationing on the island of Mykonos.
